Making the Most of a Quick Workout

By now we all know that running is my go-to workout. But sometimes there isn't time for a good run.  Sometimes we feel like there isn't time for any kind of workout at all. But working out isn't something that always needs to take much time. So don't let that be an excuse anymore! Here are some ways to get a good workout in, even when you're short on time.

Do a more intense, but shorter workout. HIIT workouts are usually pretty short but they are so, so effective. HIIT is a combination of high-intensity exercise and active recovery or low-intensity exercises and no breaks.  You can find HIIT workouts on Aaptiv or even on youtube pretty easily. I love that they are quick and still challenging so I feel like I got a good workout in, even if I only had 15-20 minutes to do it in.

If you are able to get a quick run in, add some hills to your run.  You'll be surprised how effective it can be to add hills to your run, even if it is a short run. Plus, hills are speedwork in disguise, and it's a great way to strengthen your glutes and hamstrings as well as help your running form.

Do something small when you have a few minutes here and there. It doesn't feel quite as good as a full workout all at once, but doing squats while folding laundry, jumping jacks with your kids, lunges to cross the room and running up your stairs a few times can make a difference in your day and give you some exercise.

When you know you're short on time, choose a couple of different exercises to do 3 times each throughout the day. Like the last tip, this one doesn't feel quite as effective, but something is better than nothing and this will give you a little energy boost every time you do it.

Give yourself a daily exercise challenge. Try to walk a certain amount of steps or miles, do as many push-ups as you can 3 times in a day, do jumping jacks every time you stand up that day. These are all great ways to make sure you get some exercise in without even having to change into workout clothes.

Challenge your muscles more by doing fewer reps with more resistance. You won't want to do this every time you workout but when you're short on time, it challenges your muscles quickly and effectively.

There are so many ways to get a workout in even when you're short on time. Use what time and equipment you have and get the most effective workout in that you can.  You won't regret working out for even just 10 minutes.

How do you squeeze your workout in when you have a busy day?

  1. Quick workout is crucial. Separate from all other workouts. After all, most often we can only afford a quick workout. After joy, for example. Or in the morning.
