Hotdog Birthday Bar and Jdawgs copy cat sauce

V's birthday was on Tuesday, he turned 3! We had a fun day and for dinner, his request was a hotdog. While that makes my job super easy, I wanted a little more than just a hot dog for Trevon and I for dinner. So I turned it into a hotdog bar.

Hotdog bars make a great dinner. They are easy and fun, the kids love them, and all you have to do to make it more of a meal is add sides and toppings. Life is just so much easier when you like hotdogs. We didn't make it a huge hotdog bar since it was just us and the kids, but we had chili, cheese, onions, pickles, buns, and sauces. For sides, there were fries and fruit.

If you are in Utah and have had a Jdawg hotdog, you know their sauce is pretty special. So I decided that for this hotdog bar, I really wanted to have some Jdawg sauce to go on mine. I didn't have time to run out and buy some, so I found a recipe online a tweaked it to work for me. Here is how I made it:

1/2 Cup Ketchup
2/3 cup brown sugar
1 Tbs mustard
1 Tbs vinegar (you could sub this for pickle juice if you don't have vinegar)

Combine in a saucepan and bring it to a boil. Let it simmer for 5 minutes and stir often. When it cools it's ready to serve. You can put it in the fridge to keep if you have left over.

It definitely made the hotdog bar better. And I have leftovers to use for lunches or any other time we decide to have a hotdog bar.

I made two different hotdogs. My first was my favorite with Jdawg sauce, onion, mayo, a pickle, and cheese.

My second was good too, but not quite as good. Chili, onion, cheese and a tiny bit of Jdawg sauce.

Are you a fan of hotdogs?  If so, what are your favorite toppings?
How do you celebrate birthdays at your house?
