5 Easy Ways to be Healthier This Summer

It's officially SUMMER! School is out and there is no more rushing to the bus or making sure kids are awake on time. We are in full relaxation mode. While we are relaxing this summer, I'm also trying to keep our family healthy. Today I'm sharing a few easy things that can help you live healthier every day.

Drink more water! Not soda, not juice, water.  I've talked about this a lot, and even though I've talked about it a lot I still struggle with this. I'm not good at drinking water throughout the day. I'm not sure what it is. I seem to kind of go through stages where I do really well and then I just forget or my body decides that it doesn't like the taste of plain water. It's weird and I'm not a fan of this happening but it does. But drinking water is so so important for our bodies. Water helps just about every part of our body function correctly. So here are the things that help me drink more water: Straws or water bottles (again, it's weird but drinking from a normal cup for some reason makes me hate water more haha. It's not something I'm proud of.), Flavored water like Hint Water helps me drink more water without the sugary flavoring, and exercise, for obvious reasons. When I know I'm running in the evening I tend to be more aware of how much I'm drinking especially in the summer!

Sleep better. Summer times, when the sun goes down late and it's warm outside all the time, it's hard sometimes to call it a day and go to bed early.  Everyone is happier with more sleep and it helps our bodies recover from all the playing, running, and excitement of the day. So it is super important to get a good amount of sleep. It's also ok to have fun and stay up once in a while, but we need to make sure that most nights we are getting the sleep that we need so we have the energy and rest that our bodies will need for the next day. Go to bed a little earlier each night to help you adjust. If you have a hard time falling asleep, try meditating a little bit before bed, or create a bedtime routine you can stick to in order to help your brain realize it's bedtime.

Snack smarter. I don't know about you but lately, I've found myself reaching for a lot of junk food snacks. I am a big believer that sometimes junk food is totally fine. I am not someone who follows a strict diet, I just try to make sure that 80% of what I eat is good, nutritious food and the other 20% can be junk food if I choose. But when the chaos of school ending comes around I start grabbing the easiest things I can, prepackaged snacks. And I can feel a difference in my energy levels and the way I'm feeling. Summer is the perfect time to fix this because there are so many great, fresh options that are better than snacks! Instead of grabbing a donut, have some strawberries with chocolate chips, grab a yogurt, make some homemade granola to carry around for something sweet. There are a ton of great things. I find that the best way for me to make sure that my snacks are good things and not junk food is to keep the good things stocked and easy to get.

Protect your skin.  This is a super easy one! When you get ready to go outside for the day, grab your sunscreen and put it on.  I love using the spray sunscreen because it's so fast and easy and I don't feel like I've got a ton of stuff on my skin. You can make sure that you're getting the best protection from your sunscreen by finding one that is a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. The broad spectrum protects against both UVA and UVB rays and keeps your skin healthier and looking younger.

Exercise. You all knew this would be on the list. Get moving, in any way you can. Play with your kids, ride a bike, go on a family hike, take a run, take the kids swimming. The more you're moving around the better for your weight, and your mood. I think summer is all about relaxing but there are more ways to relax than to just sit and watch TV or play video games. Exercise might seem like work and not feel like relaxing at first, but once you start doing it you start realizing that exercise makes you happier, and helps you relax more!

Summer is a perfect time to start focusing on being healthier, but you can do these things any time of year to help you be healthier and happier all the time.

What is the easiest thing you're doing to be healthier right now?

What are your current health goals?

  1. these are great tips, especially about the sleep and snacking better. I notice that I have way more energy when I do these two things.

  2. Great and easy tips.

I am trying to cut back on my soda habit, but I hate water and its' a struggle for me to drink it. I'm attempting to do better. Really.

I am also all about active activities this summer - sure, we have some chill days, but we are also spending lots of time at the beach and pool, and now that the rain seems to be gone, we will be heading out for some hikes and other adventures.

    1. I feel you on the the water! I don't drink any soda really, I just got in the habit of not drinking it in high school when my coach didn't want us to for our training. But I do prefer milk or juice or anything flavored really. That's why Hint worked so well for me.

  3. I have really upped my water game in recent years. I have a 20-oz. bottle I keep refilling at work (from the filtered water dispenser/tank), and with a tiny squeeze of Mio, I'm good. I easily drink 60-oz. while at work, plus have it nearby while at home or when I'm out walking.

  4. Great, easy ways to be healthier! I just got myself a new, insulated water bottle and I'm loving it! I cut my kombucha habit back from 1/day to 1/week when I noticed how much sugar was lurking in it.

  5. I'm trying to drink more water and cut back on wine. Harder than you'd think!

  6. These are great tips! I love getting outside with my girls in the warmer weather. Summer just feels healthier somehow.

  7. I'm pretty good with water but not so good with sleep. Especially when it's light out later -- I lose track of time!

  8. definitely YES on the water thing. I'm a water drinker anyway and I love it ice cold!! currently have two bottles on my desk as I type this!

we are trying to get in the habit of sunscreen as well. my husband was just treated for a small spot on his back, and now he needs to wear sunscreen ALL THE TIME (if you ask me). putting chemotherapy crème on your skin 3 times a day for 4 weeks (plus the steroid crème after that for 6) SUCKS.

my current health goals? I just want to stay healthy. So I continue the journey.

  9. I'm trying to be better about always carrying a water bottle with me. I did so back in 2015 when I was pregnant, but its a habit that I should really do all of the time.
